This rectangular Persian calligraphic panel, written in nastaʿlīq script, was produced in 1899 in Qajar Iran by the calligrapher Youssef. Measuring approximately 12.5 × 8 inches and written in dark ink on aged paper, the composition features a prominent, elongated principal line of text drawn from Saʿdī’s Gulistān, surrounded by a gold-ruled border and set within a later frame. The work’s scale and format suggest both portability and display. Beneath the dominant line, smaller oblique inscriptions unfold in a compressed hand, creating a hierarchical yet non-linear visual structure that encourages contemplative, fragmentary reading. The panel’s provenance traces its movement from the Asian Institute in New York to the collection of Ada Small Moore, and ultimately to the Yale University Art Gallery in 1951, marking its transition from a functional literary object to a museum artifact.
This passage comes from the “Art of Conversation” chapter of the Gulistān, further speaking to the work’s ethical and pedagogical function within Persianate culture. Though not scripture, Saʿdī’s aphorisms were central to cultivating adab—a system of moral discipline shaped through memorization, recitation, and daily reflection. The panel’s layout reinforces this use: rather than presenting a continuous narrative, it structures reading as a meditative encounter with discrete textual fragments. Produced during the Qajar period, when elites patronized calligraphy that emulated classical Safavid styles, the work also participates in a broader cultural project of linking contemporary authority to a prestigious Persian past. Its likely inclusion in a muraqqaʿ (album) further situates it within practices of connoisseurship and curated display, where aesthetic refinement and ethical instruction were inseparable.
